"Der junge Gastdirigent Paul Mauffray ließ sich auf die bayerischen Taktwechsel [Egk: Ouvertüre zu „Die Zaubergeige“] gewandt ein. Rhythmusbegabt wie die amerikanischen Musiker sind, schlüpfte er schnell ins bajuwarische Gewand. Paul Mauffray gelang es [Ravel: Boléro], das stoisch den ostinaten Rhythmus tickende Schlagwerk, wie die harmonisch immer bizarrer übereinander gelagerten Instrumentalmischungen so in der Steigerung zu disponieren, daß die orgiastische Entladung mit dem berühmten „Break“ punktgenau kam und zu ebensolchen Befallsstürmen führte."

"Près de deux cents candidats de quarante et une nationalités étaient sur la ligne de départ pour les présélections organisées au printemps dans quatre villes (Besançon, Saint-Pétersbourg, New York et Pékin) et consistant à « diriger » deux pianistes interprétant à quatre mains une transcription du Concerto pour orchestre de Bartok. …Les huitièmes de finale ont confronté le 16 septembre au Kursaal les vingt candidats qui ont franchi avec succès ce premier obstacle : quatre Japonais, trois Chinois, trois Russes, deux Français, un Allemand, un Américain, un Belge, un Canadien, un Coréen, un Estonien, un Indonésien et un Israélien, avec une moyenne d’âge de vingt-neuf ans. … Le jury, parmi ces vingt candidats, pouvait en sélectionner dix, mais il préfère envoyer seulement huit d’entre eux en quarts de finale le lendemain, toujours au Kursaal. Peut-être aurait-il pu faire une petite place à la précision de Wilson Hermanto (vingt-huit ans, Indonésie) et au charisme de Paul Mauffray (trente-deux ans, Etats-Unis). … "
